How To Save A Dead Frienddocumentaire
Marusya Syroechkovskaya • 2023 • Duitsland, Frankrijk, Noorwegen, Zweden • 104 min.

How to Save a Dead Friend is gefilmd gedurende twaalf jaar.

EN/ Marusya and Kimi are inseparable lovers coming-of-age as Russia’s authoritarian dreams take hold. Turning Marusya’s camera on themselves, the two capture the euphoric anxiety of their youth, burning the candle at both ends - but as one light burns brighter, the other may be extinguished forever. A message from a silenced generation.

This documentary memoir cum love letter is moving, harrowing and, despite everything, hopeful; above all, it is fearsomely candid.
Screendaily
Raw and moving, Marusya Syroechkovskaya’s documentary describes growing up in 21st-century Russia, but is so intimate and honest that it would probably work just as well in a vacuum.
Cineuropa
Coming from the inside, and from a generation Putin is seeking to silence and then refashion to his imperialist image, How to Save A Dead Friend […] is essential viewing for those seeking an intimate understanding of Russian society from within
The Film Verdict
Surprisingly for a film that takes an unflinching look at mental illness and addiction in the "Depression Federation" (...) the tale is one of unbridled joie de vivre as much as it is about ultimate self-destruction
Filmmaker Magazine
It’s a love story about two lost individuals who found their soulmate and saved one another in the process as best as they could. But most of all, it’s a film that honours the voice of a lost generation and hopes to save the next.
